Dr. Erica Lee, DNP, PMHNP-BC, CPNP-BC I'm Erica Lee, a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner with a deep passion for helping children, teens, and their loved ones navigate the complexities of mental health. With a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree from ASU and 13 years of nursing experience, my journey into the field of mental health has been one of continuous growth and learning. Prior to this role, I have spent nine years as a nursing professor, where I honed my skills in making complex concepts accessible and relatable. My own life experiences have given me a profound understanding of the challenges posed by ADHD, trauma, anxiety, depression, and grief. I've walked the path of healing and resilience and am committed to helping others do the same. I'm not just a healthcare provider; I'm a mom of three young adults, and I've experienced the trials and triumphs of parenting firsthand. As a teen mom, before it was 'cool,' I learned the power of determination, education, and support in overcoming obstacles. I understand that idealism is not for everyone, and I do my best to advise and support based on real-life circumstances. In my practice, I specialize in teaching and connecting with my patients in a relatable way. I believe that understanding and empathy are the cornerstones of effective care. I'm dedicated to creating a safe and nurturing environment for children and teens to explore their mental well-being. I am open-minded and fully committed to providing care that respects and honors individual experiences. As a passionate queer ally, I firmly believe in inclusivity and creating a safe, accepting space for all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. My journey is a testament to the belief that, with the right support and guidance, individuals can overcome adversity and find their path to wellness. I look forward to joining you on this journey to better mental health. Q&A What is your favorite movie? The Royal Tenenbaums If you could have a superpower, what superpower would you pick? Telekinesis Favorite bands/singer? Run the Jewels, David Bowie, Phantogram, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Beck If you had 3 wishes, what would you wish for? • Everyone has to follow the same rules that nurses do (do no harm, treat everyone equally, advocate for all, don’t spread infection). • Climate change to be resolved in a way that is sustainable and equitable. • Leaders who operate for the good of all Tell us a fun fact about yourself. I'm a decent karaoke rapper. What are you most passionate about in the mental health field? Helping families through difficult situations and things that no one wants to talk about. I have learned from my experience raising three kids and I know it didn’t have to be as hard as it was, had I known more and understood how my own trauma impacted my parenting style. Tell us about your dogs. Koko (12 yo GSP), Cromwell (6 yo pit mix) and Bowie (3 yo pocket American Bully). It’s hard to describe how much these pups mean to me, but they are my besties and have kept me company through the hardest time in my life. They each have their own quirks and personalities and should have their own reality show. Thoughts on adult ADHD? Many people have struggled their whole life, believing that what made things difficult was laziness or lack of discipline. They do not know that things don’t have to be so hard. I believe that ADHD should be included in the differential for adults who have difficulty with organization, motivation, concentration, etc. and considered along with CPTSD, anxiety, and depression. Are medications lifelong? think that medication can be life-changing in many cases, but I also know that other actions can be just as, if not more, effective. I aim to educate my patients on various solutions so that they are able to make informed decisions and feel open to receiving/sharing feedback when something isn’t working. I don’t believe medication has to be lifelong and should be reassessed regularly and discontinued when no longer needed. What are other things you feel could be beneficial to improve mental health other than medications? Self-talk is a huge factor that I continue to explore with my own mental health. It is so important to recognize the way that your thoughts shape your mental health and be intentional about speaking kindly to yourself. Do you have any personal experiences regarding mental health you are open to sharing? I have experienced trauma, homelessness, abuse, anxiety, depression, and complex grief. I have loved ones who have experienced addiction, bipolar, ADHD. I utilize these experiences to identify with others, and I also believe that this helps me keep bias in check. What is your philosophy on using medication to treat mental health for kids? I absolutely believe that medication can be an appropriate intervention for kids, and the impact it can have for families is undeniable. I don’t believe it is the only answer in every situation and I am comfortable suggesting/discussing alternatives with parents. Do you have experience in working with non-binary and trans kids? Yes - in my experience learning at Paperflower, Phoenix Children’s, and CRS, I have worked with kids who identify as trans, non-binary, and gender-fluid. I feel comfortable helping parents navigate this and can also hold space for the conflict they might feel. Ultimately, we need to advocate for our patients and help their family learn to support them. What are your thoughts on screen time and social media for kids and teens? I’m learning to understand the impact that screen time and social media has on humans, including the dopamine dysregulation that comes from nearly non-stop screen time during waking hours. I think that it’s a complex topic from a kid’s point of view and may even be their social lifeline. I think it is important for parents to know that using screen time and social media as a reward/punishment has a greater impact than they might imagine and that setting boundaries up front and revisiting them at regular intervals is important. How do you feel about medical marijuana? I wish there was more opportunity to research cannabis and other traditional plant medicines to help guide their use for mental and medical indications. Current American policy prevents adequate research and is influenced by pharmaceutical industries, who are motivated to keep these highly regulated. If a patient is nervous about an evaluation, especially when talking about tough things like trauma or sexual abuse, what would you want them to know? I would want my patients to know they can share as much or as little as they want with me. Explaining this is important up front, and I might even use tools like a signal or safe word that the client can utilize to let me know it's too much.

Foster Care/Adoption Melody understands adoption and foster care as a traumatic experience as well as the flaws of the system. Anxiety Anxiety can be tough to manage and verbalize - Melody offers excellent options for medication management in cases of high anxiety. Q&A Favorite movie: This is such a difficult question because my first instinct is to write a top 10 list. If I had to choose a favorite based on how many times I have watched it, it would probably be Spirited Away because it's an absolute feast for the senses! The animation is stunning, and the food looks absolutely delicious—I mean, who wouldn't want to taste those mouthwatering dishes from the spirit world? Plus, I'm a huge fan of all of Hayao Miyazaki's films and accompanying soundtracks. Beyond the scrumptious visuals, the story of growth and the healing powers of love are so heartwarming. I love the transformation from a scared little girl to a confident hero while navigating the whimsical and sometimes downright bizarre world of spirits. Favorite superhero: I am not a huge superhero buff but I think I would say Batman, even though it might seem really mainstream. I just feel like despite not possessing superhuman abilities, his dedication to justice and his unwavering commitment to protecting his city make him a true hero. His resilience and determination to overcome his own darkness and trauma, channeling it into a force for good is inspiring. I think we can see it as a reminder that even in our darkest moments, we can find the courage to make a difference in the world. Plus, the movies are really cinematically pleasing! The complex and captivating villains add such a depth to his story. If you could have any superpower, what would it be? If I could have any superpower, I would choose the ability to manipulate matter at the atomic level, much like Atom Eve from the comic series "Invincible." With this power, I could reshape the world around me, transforming objects, creating life-saving medicines, or even altering the fabric of reality itself. The ability to manipulate atoms would give me unparalleled control over the physical universe, allowing me to solve problems, heal wounds, and bring about positive change on a grand scale. It's a power limited only by imagination and ethical considerations, making it both awe-inspiring and profoundly impactful. Favorite bands/singer/music: Music is all about the feelings it creates, so I just go with the flow and let the music take me on a journey through memories and emotions. My taste in music is a bit of a mishmash, but that's what makes it so special! I can always enjoy Indie music from bands like The Strokes, The Killers, and Modest Mouse. But then there is the Dixie Chicks, whose music takes me back to those carefree days of childhood, riding in the car with my mom, her hair blowing in the wind as we sang along with the same CD over and over again. Fleetwood Mac holds a special place in my heart as my ultimate favorite band and soundtrack to my soul. Whenever karaoke is on the table I will be there belting out "Gold Dust Women" with my friends, laughing and singing our hearts out. And when it's time to tackle chores around the house, you can bet I've got the Bluey soundtrack blasting, with my little one dancing around and making a mess behind me. Music is about the memories they bring back and the moments they create, weaving through the fabric of my life and adding color to every day. If you could have three wishes, what would they be? 1. To travel a peaceful world with my loved ones, exploring new cultures, tasting exotic foods, and making unforgettable memories together. 2. To have the ability to speak every language fluently, allowing me to connect with people from all walks of life and forge meaningful relationships wherever I go. 3. To foster a world where every child grows up in a nurturing and supportive environment, free from trauma and adversity; feeling loved, valued, and empowered to chase their dreams. Tell us one fun fact about yourself: One fun fact about me is that I'm passionate about travel and adventure and I find solace in nature. One of the most memorable experiences I've had was attending the Dalai Lama's 80th birthday celebration in India. Another unforgettable journey I embarked on was hitchhiking from Tanzania to Namibia with nothing but a backpack and a tent. It was a remarkable adventure filled with unforgettable sights, fascinating encounters, and a profound sense of freedom! My favorite quote from the trip is, “you can’t camp here, the lions will carry you away in the night.” Tell us about your pets: We welcomed a rescue dog into our family named Juneau. He's been such a blessing and has quickly become a beloved member of our household. Juneau is incredibly sweet and has a gentle disposition, making him the perfect companion for our family, especially with my two young sons. He's always ready for playtime or cuddles, and his loving nature brings so much joy into our lives. We had a dog years ago named Piper but due to her trauma history she needed constant companionship and we could not have two dogs at the time so she went to live with my close friend. I still see her often and she spends every other weekend with Juneau. I am so happy they get to be friends! What are you most passionate about in the mental health field? My passion for perinatal mental health runs deep. Through personal experiences with postpartum depression and anxiety, combined with years of working as an antepartum and postpartum nurse, I've gained invaluable insights into the unique challenges of pregnancy and postpartum. I firmly believe that everyone deserves support during this journey, whether they're basking in the joys of motherhood or grappling with anxiety and depression. I'm committed to destigmatizing mental health conversations in the perinatal period and advocating for accessible support services. This cause is close to my heart, and I'm dedicated to making a positive impact for individuals and families. Let's banish mom guilt and shaming once and for all! What is your philosophy on using medication to treat mental health? Are medications lifelong? Medication can be a valuable tool in managing mental health conditions, but it's not the only solution. I believe in a holistic approach that combines medication with therapy, lifestyle changes, and social support. Maybe medication is right for you or maybe you would benefit from forest bathing or wilderness therapy or acupuncture. There are many paths, lets figure out which one is right for you. Whether medication is lifelong depends on the individual and their unique circumstances. If a patient is nervous about an evaluation, especially when talking about tough things like trauma or sexual abuse, what would you want them to know? I want patients to know that it's okay to feel nervous or apprehensive about discussing tough topics like trauma or abuse and that they can set the pace that they feel comfortable with. Our sessions are a safe and non-judgmental space where they can express themselves openly, and I'm here to support and guide them through the process with compassion and empathy. Tell us your thoughts about the current state of the foster care system. I have seen firsthand both the strengths and shortcomings of the foster system. While there are dedicated individuals working tirelessly to support foster youth, there's a clear need for improvement, particularly in ensuring a smoother transition into adulthood with adequate support and resources. What are other things you feel could be beneficial to improve mental health other than medications? I am a big believer in natures almost magical ability to heal and restore! Spending time outdoors can offer a sense of peace and tranquility that can alleviate stress and improve mood. Practices such as therapy, mindfulness, exercise, nutrition, and social connection also play important roles in promoting mental well-being. I believe it is essential to address mental health from a holistic perspective that considers the various factors influencing an individual's experience. Tell us about the intersection between your experience in Women and Infant care and/or teaching + mental health? My experience in both teaching and women and infant care has given me a unique perspective on the intersection of education and mental health. As a former teacher for 8 years, I've honed my skills in communicating with children in a comfortable and supportive manner. My background in education, with a focus on family studies and human development, has equipped me with valuable insights into the developmental needs of children and families. Transitioning to a role as an antepartum and postpartum nurse, I found that my teaching experience allowed me to better prepare individuals for the profound changes of parenthood. I understand the importance of providing comprehensive support and education to expectant and new parents, not only in terms of physical health but also in addressing the emotional and psychological aspects of pregnancy, childbirth, and early parenthood. My ability to advocate for children and families, coupled with my knowledge of child development and maternal health, allows me to approach mental health issues in a holistic and empathetic manner. I believe in the power of education, communication, and support in promoting mental well-being for individuals and families throughout the perinatal and early childhood stages.
- Dr. Bre Chamoff, DNP, PMHNP-BC | Pediatric & Trauma-Informed Psychiatric Care | Paperflower Psychiatry
Dr. Bre Chamoff, DNP, PMHNP-BC, specializes in pediatric psychiatric care with a focus on trauma, ADHD, and brain-gut connections. Offering compassionate care to children, adolescents, and young adults across Arizona. Now accepting new patients Dr. Bre Chamoff, DNP, PMHNP-BC, CPNP-BC Bre (like the cheese) Chamoff (She/Her) is triple board certified in pediatric primary care, pediatric critical care, and psychiatric mental health. She has been a nurse practitioner for nearly a decade working in various pediatric settings. She is passionate about care for kids, adolescents, and young adults. Her prescribing philosophy is meds are not first line, unless they absolutely need to be. The team effort between provider and patient is to get that spark back, let your beams shine bright, and use all options to get there. She commonly says her “drug of choice” is human connection, and this certainly bodes well for fostering a team approach with her patients to make a plan that suits them. Bre has worked in pediatric GI specializing in illnesses such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and functional constipation and how those are experienced both physically and emotionally. She has a particular interest in brain-gut connections and the impact on mental health and behavior. She was also one of the first 2 nurse practitioners who started the pediatric trauma program at Queens Medical Center in Hawaii. She has since spent much of her time working inpatient at Flagstaff Medical Center on general pediatrics and in the pediatric ICU. She has a blunt and comical (mostly when appropriate) approach, because life is hard and no one gets out alive. Bre currently resides in Flagstaff, AZ. In her free time, you can find Bre Snowboarding , traveling to live music to any number of bands including Tool, Gojira, Daughter, Carina Round, Rainbow Kitten Surprise, System of a Down, Elton John, Bon Iver, Puscifer, Primus or Tim McGraw (to name an eclectic few), reading books galore, or begging her friends to play board games with her. She has a ’73 VW bus named Clementine (who sometimes starts and sometimes does not start, but Clementine’s charm is not dependent on her reliability, or the lack thereof) and a 6 yo Bengal named Ananda, who runs the show entirely. As you’ll note in Bre’s Q&A she is verbose and rarely lacking the words she needs to overly express her interests and ideas with many caveats and sidebars. She offers both an apology and congratulations for this. *only taking new pediatric patients* Pediatric Mental Health Bre is an expert in pediatric mental health encompassing ADHD, autism, sensory procesing, mood, anxiety, and trauma. Medical With a background in acute pediatric care, Bre is an excellent resource for kids with co-existing medical conditions or gastrointestinal problems. Adolescent Mental Health Teenagers can be hard to connect with -- but they will appreciate Bre's humor and energy and may (well, hopefully) look forward to visits with her. Q&A What is your favorite movie? Of all time: Almost Famous; Disney: Emperor’s New Groove But to be fair my second language is movie quotes; I’d say I’m fluent. Favorite superhero? I always try to have a more unique one but the truth is, it’s Superman. I love that he’s just unassuming Clark Kent, then off saving folks, then back to glasses wearing, run of the mill Clark Kent. Big fan. If you could have a superpower, what superpower would you pick? Easy! I ask people this all the time! Teleportation. I could see all my favorite people anytime, travel to all live music, without leaving any carbon detriment, and minimizing travel time. Very efficient. Favorite bands/singer? Tool without question. But, music is my insides on the outsides. I love music so very deeply. I spend most of my spare time on live music, and traveling to live music. I am not personally musically inclined, but I am a big-time consumer for sure. I have a pretty wide array of likes. Indie. Folk. Bluegrass. Metal. Country. And that is certainly not the end of it. I collect vinyl because I like how it sounds despite its wild inconvenience. If you had 3 wishes, what would you wish for? Selfishly: (1) the ability to speak all languages fluently (2) to see a new and varied sunset in every place of the world (3) an eidetic memory (wish 3.5: Limitless quantities of Cinnamon Toast Crunch accompanied by free dental care for life) Broad and esoterically: -that every individual has a true inherent fundamental drive to first understand themselves, then understand others, and only then attempt to altruistically affect change. I read a bumper sticker yesterday that said “everyone is just doing their best…. And that is fucking terrifying” Hearrrrrrd that! What is your favorite food? Okay, are you asking what is my death row meal? Or what is my favorite day to day food? Because my death row meal is for sure next day spaghetti! don’t give me fresh spaghetti. Make it the day before, let it sit all night, and then microwave it- that’s my last meal! Day to day I have a gnarly sweet tooth. So on second thought back to the 3 wishes I think I’ll just take lifetime dental care. 😏 What are you most passionate about in the mental health field? Access to care for kids and adolescents. Offering a true partnership where the child is considered an active person with meaningful thoughts, feelings, and experiences. What are some experiences you have had that make you unique? My mental health nursing rotation in undergrad was in a study abroad program in Belfast, Norther Ireland. This was illuminating to see psychiatric care offered in a different and social model. I have a long strong background in pediatric medicine and that offers a robust amount of experience working with complicated pediatric illnesses. I went to 9+ schools as a child (not a military brat, just life circumstances) so adapting to change is a superpower I gained at a young age out of necessity. This just means I regard most strangers as “friends I haven’t met yet”. I went to Ecuador for 3 months to learn Spanish, then System of a Down went on tour so I came back early for a concert. Learning Spanish is still a life goal of mine. I own a 73 VW bus named Clementine. In an ideal world, she would be my traveling office (she breaks down too much, but I still love her). What is your philosophy on using medication to treat mental health for kids? I believe medicine, like many other things is a tool. I like to explain it this way: consider depression, anxiety, trauma, aggression, etc as broken glass on the ground. We can clean it up without tools like a broom, or without shoes on, but it’s messier and more difficult that way. Using the right tools is going to make it both easier and safer. Sometimes one shoe is therapy, maybe the other shoe is medicine, and maybe the broom is family dynamics. Medication is rarely the singular fix for anything (except for maybe in diabetes), it’s an adjunct for symptom management. It also can allow for healing to occur. Medication is not always forever, and its not always the right choice. It so situationally based, and more complicated than one blanket approach applies to all. Generally, I’m pretty conservative, but not afraid to consider meds when they are an appropriate tool. I am a firm believer in collaboration with my patients and parents. I won’t give teens a medicine they don’t want. Medicine is not the only option, I’m a big believer that work is often necessary when it comes to caring for our mental health, and that involves the whole family unit, nothing exists in a vacuum. Everyone is unique, sometimes we use all tools all at once, sometimes we try them on differently, it’s about the individual. I’m also a big proponent of natural and holistic remedies, but they are not without potential for harm themselves and I think it necessary to be mindful of risk and benefit of any and all interventions. We have to be mindful of all things that affect our neurochemicals, to include many things we forget to consider like caffeine, sleep, exercise etc. If a patient is nervous about an evaluation, especially when talking about tough things like trauma or sexual abuse, what would you want them to know? Getting to the deep dark stuff is one of the hardest things we ever do, so before you do it know this is a safe space without judgement. I won’t make any decisions about your care without you, you’re in control here. So, first know you’re not alone. Second, those experiences don’t define you. Sometimes healing is a process in patience; I ask that you be patient with you and all that comes up, and patient with this process as I walk alongside you through it. Sometimes we need to say “not today satan” and table that stuff, which is perfectly fine. Others we jump in, like I said, it’s a process. Most importantly that process isn’t always linear and that’s okay too. There’s a meme somewhere that says something like ‘sometimes life is messy, sometimes life is beautiful, most the time it’s both’. That feels a little too flowery for some of the deep dark shenanigans we go through, but at the end of the days it’s not total crap. Talk to us about working with divorced families, coparenting or families in turmoil? This can get dang hairy. in initial evals it’s important in my book to set the precedent and expectation. Both parents have to be on board, and while that’s often difficult, I feel good about being firm in support of this model. There’s no room for separate meetings or visits, playing ping pong between warring forces. I’m not generally a proponent of avoiding, or releasing families, solely due to parental conflict because the only person there who suffers is the child who can’t get the care they need. I’m willing to be a force when needed to facilitate the forward motion of care for the child. My initial approach is always attempting to understand the perception of each person, the intention of each and then collectively identify a common goal. If I’m right, and I hope I am, we’re all attempting to achieve what is best for the child. When there is an impasse, I tend to get direct and blunt singularly with parents. It’s important to be factual. This has been really effective historically. If you read this and feel you want to go on this wild ride with me, just know I can be spicy, but it’s in an effort to achieve a common goal. Do you have any personal experiences regarding mental health you are open to sharing? I am an open book but find the specifics to be more beneficially shared contextually. I wouldn’t want to wallop the world with my history on a website, but I’ve been through some doozies. My own “colorful” experiences if you will. It makes me feel really comfortable talking about legitimately anything. I often tell my patients there’s a slim chance I haven’t discussed anything you’re able to bring to the table, so hit me with it and let’s dive in. I also have an interest in non-traditional medicines, including the use of entheogens for further treatment and exploration of mental health disorders in future practice. Talk to us about the overlap of physical and mental health for kids. Physical and mental health aren’t entirely separate, and while our medical model and approach treats it that way, they are deeply integrated. It has been astounding to see how many kids are left untreated regarding mental health for an enumerate number of reasons. We live in an unprecedented time and continue to attempt to apply historical solutions to it. While that’s not fully unexpected as we have to go with what we know, we also have to ask ourselves how much of the mental health disparity that we see in adults could be mitigated if approached in childhood. On the other hand, I’m not a fan of pathologizing childhood behavior to made them more compliant to a world that expects them not to be kids: an approach at balance is the key (cliches are true for a reason). I think my experience with complex medical illnesses is going to translate well in terms of my ability to communicate and combine holistic care with both pediatric patients and parents. I also have a keen eye to ferret out medical and mental health causes separately and in conjunction. Do you have experience in working with non-binary and trans kids? Yes definitely! In fact, I originally chose endocrine as my area of specialty focus. So I started meeting with pediatric patients interested in delaying puberty at the onset of my career as a student NP. This was in 2013. Since then, I have encountered a wide array of patients across the spectrum of trans, non-binary, questioning, and more. I am a big proponent of self-expression and exploration. I am a big fan of helping my patients feel seen and actualized and sometimes that includes bridging the conversation with loved ones and being a support in that time. What are your thoughts on screen time and social media for kids and teens? I think a blanket statement here isn’t going to work. Like anything else, no absolute is the answer. I think when we fully restrict social media children/teens experience a sense of isolation, with full unabridged free reign they can experience any number of things including grooming or bullying, and can be the victim or perpetrator of such. I think with anything, active presence and engagement from the caregiver with mutually agreed upon structure and boundaries is going to be a solid approach. Too much of anything isn’t great. The stimulation of imagination to aid in the progression of developmental stages is best served with varied experiences, they cannot all be garnered from a screen. That is not to even touch on the secondary medical difficulties such as sedentary lifestyle leading to obesity and insulin resistance, and visual decline. With all of that in mind, never in my life have I said to a patient “okay 2 hours of screen time a day” and that happened. So instead, I ask families, would it be possible, once per day, when you go to watch TV, or look at the tablet or phone, you set a timer and do anything else that’s not screen related until the timer goes off (ironically said timer is typically on a phone screen, we can’t win them all). That’s a manageable task, and reduces it by a little. Small achievable changes are often the name of the game. My personal stance on screen time is it isn’t great, would love to decrease it. But my personal stance on going to the gym is that I should be going more, and I’m literally eating cheese its at 10:30 pm while I write this so life is messy and hard, and we have to make the goals achievable and do what we can!

Apollo 13 - love Tom Hanks (but I rarely watch movies) Do you really live in a bus: Yep! My husband, toddler and I have lived in a converted school bus (26 feet, 6 window, old wheelchair bus) since May 2021. We have a kitchen, oven, bathroom, etc - everything we would need. It offers us a great balance for travel and adventure - but also we sleep in the same bed every night and have dinner as a family at the same table every night. Did moving into a bus solve all your life problems? Nope nope nope - life is never like instagram. I still struggle with anxiety, still get lonely at times, still need to go to work I just happen to do all these things in a bus. Do you think everyone should move into a bus? Nope - My husband and I entered into a time of discernment before making this decision and we continue to discern if this is the right decision for us and for our family. I hope others have the space to discern what makes them happy and have the support to make big, scary, and unconventional changes if that is what discernment is calling them too. Also it is important to recognize that as nurses (my husband is also a nurse) we hold a lot of privilege with our jobs, titles, and financial flexibility to make this lifestyle work for us right now. What inspired you to become a nurse: I was inspired to be a nurse after working extensively with people experiencing homelessness, substance use disorder, and severe mental illness. I lived and worked for almost three years at a homeless shelter and outreach center. This was incredibly formative. I learned to live in community, live simply, and formed deep and meaningful friendships with people experiencing homelessness. Do you have any personal experiences regarding mental health you are open to sharing? Without oversharing - events that I would not think to cause trauma did cause trauma and ignoring my problems did not work and recovering from trauma is really hard work. What are you most passionate about in the mental health field? So many ideas come to mind. First, finding creative and non-traditional ways of addressing concerns - I am interested in continuing to learn about functional medicine, forest bathing (known in Japanese as shinrin yoku), and new research on psilocybin therapy. Second, asking the question - how to combat loneliness in society? So many people I talk with express dealing with loneliness and I do not have a great plan to solve this but something I think about frequently. Third, how can trauma be prevented? I think the field as a whole is recognizing the effects of trauma and finding new and better ways to treat trauma - but so little is done to prevent trauma. What is your philosophy on using medication to treat mental health? Medications can be one option as part of a larger treatment plan but not the only option. I want to use a process of shared-decision making to come up with a plan that we are both comfortable with and then to continue to reassess that plan based on your needs. Are medications lifelong? Do you want them to be life long? I want to continue to talk about your needs and wishes and how medications are beneficial or not beneficial to your life. Life is every change and at different points you are likely to have different needs. I don’t think a plan we come up with right now is going to be the same plan 30 years from now. Does a patient who sees you HAVE to be on medication? Medication can be one option but there are lots of other treatment options and I want to explore your needs, values, and wishes and come up with a treatment plan together. If a patient is nervous about an evaluation, especially when talking about tough things like trauma or sexual abuse, what would you want them to know? First - this is your appointment and we can talk about what is most important to you in a way that feels safe for you. Some people find it easiest to stream-of-consciously talk to me while other people like me ask lots of yes or no questions. This is something we can navigate together and you can share as you feel comfortable. What are your thoughts about treating adult ADHD? This is one of my favorite things to treat. ADHD is exhausting. I think often people just adapt and don’t realize how exhausting ADHD is in everyday life. Also ADHD can often present as anxiety or depression and we should spend lots of time exploring the causes of the specific symptoms you are experiencing. Tell us one fun fact about yourself. I have a BA in Philosophy and a BS in Computational Mathematics. I really like math.

I am more of TV person, I enjoy the evolving story lines. If I had to pick a few it would have be some classics such as Matilda, The Goonies, Little Rascals, and Fried Green Tomatoes. Favorite superhero? No favs, top three Deadpool, Doctor Strange, and Wolverine! If you could have a superpower, what superpower would you pick? Teleportation! I love to travel and who wouldn’t want to get to their destination in seconds?! Favorite bands/singer? I can listen to almost anything. I love listening to the 90s for a feel-good mood. I also enjoy alternative rock, punk, hip hop, reggae, indie, rap, pop, and country. Top favs across the board would be The Offspring, Tool, Alkaline Trio, Train, Sublime, Garth Brooks, The Distillers, Ice Cube, Dre, Lizzo, and Taylor Swift (no apologies). If you had 3 wishes, what would you wish for? Ensure everyone has a home For my children to live their lives happily and never be in need of anything Level up quickly on any skill I choose What diagnoses are you most comfortable and experienced working with? I am most comfortable treating anxiety, PTSD, mood disorders, and ADHD/neurodevelopmental disorders. What are you most passionate about in the mental health field? I am passionate about education, listening to my patients, and empowering them to advocate for themselves to better overcome the barriers that have existed for so long. Stigma remains a significant obstacle in mental health, preventing many from seeking the care they need. If I can change even one person’s perspective on behavioral health, it brings us one step closer to meaningful change. What are other things you feel could be beneficial to improve mental health other than medications?: There are several studies that recommend therapy as first line treatment in many conditions. In addition, lifestyle changes such as exercise, proper nutrition, and good sleep can help further promote a good mood. I find mindfulness techniques to be very helpful in improving motivation and reducing stress levels when patients are stuck on how to start. What is your philosophy on using medication to treat mental health? Are medications lifelong? Does a patient who sees you HAVE to be on medication? Medications are just one of the tools we have in our behavioral health bag. They are not always needed or wanted. Therapy, exercise, lifestyle changes, and supplements are often incorporated with treatment plans in variable combinations. My experience working with medications is that they can help make day to day functioning and participation in therapy easier if you’re having a hard time. The question comes down to, “How much are you struggling?” Tell us about your experience working in behavioral health the past few years: My experience with behavioral health began as a nurse working in the neurology department and later with patients experiencing crisis in the emergency department. Through my experience as a nurse I was able to fully realize the impact of untreated mental health and the difficulty there was in obtaining that care. This led me to pursue becoming a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner and over the last couple years have been working primarily in private practice. My experience includes treating patients 6 years old and up, combining holistic and medication management techniques. I also have a special interest in psychedelics and have experience providing Spravato and IV ketamine treatment to patients experiencing treatment resistant depression. Do you have any personal experiences regarding mental health you are open to sharing? I come from a culture where mental health is solved by “pulling up your pants,” or “trying harder.” No matter how high my pants were and how much I kept pushing, it wasn’t enough and it just led to more issues. I finally exhausted myself and realized mental health was for me, not anyone else. Only I could determine what was right for myself and quite frankly it was no one else’s business. How do you feel about marijuana? Marijuana is legal in Arizona and patients have the right to consume if they wish. Marijuana like any other drug or supplement has its risks and benefits. As a provider I acknowledge that patients benefit from different avenues of care. Every BODY is different. Some people do well with moderation and others struggle and exacerbate their symptoms. Together we can explore what is right for you in a judgement free zone. What are your thoughts about treating adult ADHD? There shouldn’t be any difference in the treatment of adult ADHD. That is, every condition should be assessed for and ruled out when meeting new patients. ADHD should always be considered for patients struggling with concentration, self-esteem, depression, and anxiety. Mental health has not been perfect in the past, and many adults including myself were not diagnosed appropriately as a child. Of course stigma plays a huge role in this. I want my patients to feel comfortable asking about any symptoms or concerns they have without fear of being judged or discriminated.

Succession or Handmaid’s Tale …Or books? ‘The Road’ by Cormac McCarthy or ‘The World to Come’ by Dara Horn Favorite superhero? I had a mad crush on Christopher Reeves’ Superman as a kiddo. But favorite now? Black Widow - I love Russian history, ballet, and confident strong women – so, she fits the bill! Or, oh wait, maybe the 1997-Gwen-Stefani-soundtracked-strong-woman-fighter-pilot Captain Marvel. Okay, both. If you could have a superpower, what superpower would you pick? I would love to have the ability to speak any language. But more in the true ‘superpower’ category - probably teleportation – it would REALLY help with school dropoff & pickup and all the activities (and I could travel and use my language super power!). Favorite bands/singer? My 10-year-old daughter is an incredible musician, so I love her – and recently we’ve been listening to a whole lot of things: Jax, Lady Gaga, Adele, Paramore, & Jack White. But all-time, long-time? Eminem. If you had 3 wishes, what would you wish for? For our incarceration system to be completely overhauled – trauma- focused treatment, vocational training, true reintegration. For endless, bottomless patience – with my kids, my spouse, my laundry, I-10 construction… To have a personal chef plan for, shop for, and cook everything all the time What is your favorite food? A good Monte Cristo sandwich What are you most passionate about in the mental health field? High quality & ACCESSIBLE Perinatal Mental Healthcare.. Accurate screenings and appropriate 1) Autism Spectrum Disorder and 2) ADHD diagnoses in girls and adult women What are some experiences you have had that make you unique? -My original career path was education - I was a high school history teacher. I quickly realized that I didn’t really want to do that forever (really kind of knew even in college – but I much preferred reading, writing, and studying abroad to early morning lab class for my pre-med/physical therapist dreams), so after teaching for 5 years and growing up a little bit, pursued nursing school. -I studied abroad in Russia for a semester in college. -I have been a Labor & Delivery Nurse for the last 10 years and LOVE it. What is your philosophy on using medication to treat mental health? Are medications lifelong? Does a patient who sees you HAVE to be on medication? Psychiatric medications can be life-saving scaffolding in the journey to managing your mental health. Sometimes they are a lifelong; sometimes they are a situation- or life-season- specific – but you are completely in control of that long-term plan and it will always be an ongoing discussion. I am a huge advocate of integrating non-medication tools into your toolbox– self-awareness, routine, practical life changes, sunlight, activity, community, and self-compassion (the list goes on) can be small-but-huge steps to transformation. Sometimes medication can be the step to take in order to be able to build in life management skills. As your provider, I will always make sure you are fully educated about medication choices as well as talking you through non-medication management techniques! If a patient is nervous about an evaluation, especially when talking about tough things like trauma or sexual abuse, what would you want them to know? You are not at fault for what happened to you. And I believe you. You didn’t deserve it – and there are absolutely no exceptions. You. Didn’t. Deserve. It. And. It. Was. Not. Your. Fault. We can talk about it when and if you are ever ready. Or I can help find the perfect people to help you process it if and when you are ready. There is no pressure or judgement. Do you have any personal experiences regarding mental health you are open to sharing? With each of my pregnancies and children, I struggled with varying degrees of depression, anxiety, OCD, and psychosis. The huge gap in care was mind boggling to me – and started my passion to transform the perinatal mental health field. As an adult I was diagnosed with ADHD and (very recently) Autism Spectrum Disorder – making so many things about my life make so much more sense and transformed my ability to manage life. How do you feel about medical marijuana? Pro - I think it can have fantastic benefits for certain things, but definitely will always talk to you about how it is impacting you and your treatment/management. Tell us about your pets: Moby – our all-white, 11-year-old, chilliest cat on the block. Marlow – our new (5 months old in November) Bernedoodle puppy. So fun and funny and naughty as all get out. What are your thoughts about treating adult ADHD? I think it is tragically underdiagnosed! Undiagnosed neurodivergence is a huge risk factor for depression & anxiety. If you weren’t an always-talking-out-of-turn, always-in-trouble, can’t-stay-in-your-seat, six-year-old white boy, you can’t possibly have ADHD. Right? Sigh. What if you were a people-pleasing rule-following girl who did great in school but put EvErYtHiNg off ‘til the last minute and now, as an adult, CaNnOt manage your laundry or kid-pick up schedules or ever quiet your brain enough to nap? Or you found that drugs or alcohol were the only way to quiet your brain or manage your anxiety? There are so many factors at play with mental health - I will always consider ADHD or ASD diagnostic criteria during an initial evaluation, and will make sure you feel clear on the risks and benefits all of the options – medication and non-medication. Tell us one fun fact about yourself: As a 6th grader, I wrote a musical about the History of Ancient Egypt. I was also the sole cast and audience member.
